Understanding Talaria Models: What's The Diff?

An image showing a side profile of a Talaria. It's cut diagonally into 3 sections with parts of the X3, MX3 and MX4 all represented.

Let’s be honest: Talaria model names can be confusing. Depending on country and distributor, the same bike could go by different names. In the end, what’s the difference between the X3, Sting MX3 and MX4 models? And which one’s right for you? Let’s break it down.

First off, all Talaria models include the following: a mid-mounted motor, switchable riding modes, regenerative braking, a handlebar-mounted info screen, LED head and tail lights, off-road tires, disc brakes and a one-year limited warranty. However, the devil is in the details, and this handy article and the included chart will help you determine which bike is best suited to your needs.

X3 (XXX)

The X3 (also known as the XXX) is the most affordable Talaria model, coming in at $4,599 CAD. Unlike the other three models (which are all “Sting” models), the X3 is an entirely different bike, from chassis to powertrain to drivetrain. It’s got a lighter frame, shorter seat height and suspension set up to accommodate less experienced riders. The X3 comes in at 57 kg (125 lbs), making it 6 kg (14 lbs) lighter than the next closest Talaria model, the Sting MX3.

The powertrain includes an IPM (internal permanent magnet) motor and a battery setup that is unique in the e-moto world: the battery pack is long, narrow and sits parallel in the frame, crossbeam-style. This design means a lower centre of gravity and a bike that is incredibly well-balanced. At 40Ah, the X3 has the same capacity at the Sting MX3

Lastly, one of the key differences to note: the X3 uses a primary belt drive and “jackshaft” design (similar to a Surron Light Bee X), not an internal gearbox like the Sting models. The X3 comes in 3 simple colours: red, black and grey.

Sting MX3

The Sting MX3 was the first production model released by Talaria. It’s also considered the base model in the Sting range and is the most affordable of the Sting models at $4,999 CAD. The MX3, MX4 and MX4 Expert all share the same frame and most components. The MX3 has 60V/38.4Ah battery, 203 mm brake discs, and a PMSM motor (permanent magnet synchronous motor). This is considered a step down from the IPM motor in the rest of the Talaria models, but it’s an affordable yet reliable option.

The MX3 is the O.G. in the Talaria lineup and has thousands of happy owners. It’s proven, durable and hits a great price point.

Sting R MX4

The next step up in the Sting lineup is the Sting R MX4. It looks nearly identical to the MX3, carrying the same frame and most of the same overall components. However, it utilizes an IPM (internal permanent magnet) motor, which is considered a better design than the PMSM; the magnets are wedged inside the rotor, not screwed to the rotor like a PMSM. It also boasts a big power increase thanks to a 60V/45Ah battery, producing 25% more peak power than the MX3. It also has beefier 220 mm brake discs. Those upgrades will set you back an extra $1,000 over the MX3, with the MX4 coming in at $5,999 CAD.

Sting MX4 Expert

Among all the models in the current Talaria lineup (June 2024), the Sting MX4 Expert stands above.

It features the same frame and powertrain as the MX4, but comes with several upgrades including an adjustable Manitou Dorado Expert front fork, Magura MT-5 brakes, a brilliant, full-colour TFT display mounted centrally on the handlebar, an improved chain guide, 53-tooth rear sprocket for more acceleration, blacked-out rims and several CNC-machined, anodized red components (linkage, peg supports, handlebar, disc guard, pegs). Even the bold graphics help it stand above the other Sting models.
